Damp Crawl Space With A Sagging Floor Above In Dighton, MA
Challenge
A homeowner in Dighton, MA was going about his day until he noticed a slight creak when he stepped on a certain part of the floor. The same area with the creak had also been sagging down a bit, causing the floor to be a little uneven. He was struck with confusion and concern because he wasn't sure if the floor would collapse in the future. He called us to see if we could deliver a solution that will fix this floor issue for good! To begin the process, our inspector visited the home and went into the crawl space that was below the sagging floor.
The inspector found mold growing on the wooden support beams and floor joists that were holding the floor up. The moisture from the outside environment seeped into this crawl space and eventually led to the mold growth, which weakens the wood. If this issue was ignored by the homeowner, a collapse would surely have been possible.
Solution
The inspector knew exactly how to prevent future mold growth along with providing a solution that will stabilize the floor above! He suggested to fully encapsulate this crawl space with our CleanSpace vapor barrier system along with installing SmartJack floor support systems underneath the sagging floor to permanently stabilize it. The homeowner agreed to the proposal knowing this will stop all of the worries he was having, and our production team arrived weeks later for the installation process!
To start, they did a deep clean in this crawl space to remove any old debris that was moldy, then they wrapped up the whole interior of this crawlspace with CleanSpace, our thick white liner that will block off any outside moisture trying to seep in! This will greatly reduce the chance of mold growth. To stabilize the floor, the crew installed our own supplemental beam to be lifted by our SmartJack system. The reason we installed our own support beam is because it's strong, steel and provides more sturdiness to the floor above. Once the SmartJacks were adjusted to stabilize this floor, the homeowner noticed a huge difference! The floor above wasn't uneven and the crawl space wasn't so humid anymore!
