Your Sump Pump and Radon Mitigation System | Amherst, MA Sump Pump
We recently received a call from one of our customers in Amherst, MA who just had a radon mitigation system installed in his basement. He also already had a sump pump and as part of this radon mitigation appt the installers sealed up the sump pump. The customer then had water in his basement shortly thereafter. So why does the sump pump need sealing if a radon system is being installed and why the water issue?
What is Radon and How is it Remedied?
Radon is a lung cancer causing gas that occurs naturally from the uranium in the soil breaking down. It is undetectable using any of our senses so there must be testing performed by a professional to identify an issue. Radon levels can even fluctuate throughout the year due to the seasons changing!
How Can Radon Enter My Home?
As a gas, radon can very easily enter into your home through cement and cracks and sump pumps. Unfortunately homes seem to almost draw in the gas, which means a radon mitigation system is necessary to rid the home of the gas and keep things at as low of a level as possible. Sealing up crawl spaces, cracks, sumps, etc. usually helps with this efforts.
The Sump Pump
If you are having a radon system installed into your home, it is important to have us come out to service your sump pump and any other products within your crawl space or basement. This will allow there to be proper function once the radon system is installed and allow for us to assist with any cracks that need sealing, etc. Our customer in Amherst, MA didn't realize we should come out prior to the radon mitigation appt. and called us after he had an issue. That is totally understandable. But after reading about his situation, I felt it important to let others know how a sump pump and crawl space can be influential in a radon situation and how we can help!
Our sump pumps have lids so sealing shouldn't be an issue unless there is something wrong with the lid or you have a different sump pump installed than one from us.
Be sure to contact us if you have any questions about how your crawl space or sump pump could affect your home's radon levels and we will gladly check things out.
